Michael Hannigan, Legal Associate
Michael Hannigan is an attorney who provides legal support to various constituencies within the university. A dual national of the United States and Republic of Ireland, Michael proudly holds two degrees from Notre Dame (undergraduate and law) and a Master’s of Science from the University of Oxford.
Michael’s professional experiences are diverse. From 2011 through 2013, he served as one of four in-house attorneys for the American subsidiary companies of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. While at Porsche, Michael worked closely with the organization’s Sales, Marketing, Treasury, Tax, Accounting, Human Resources and Compliance departments and supervised nearly all Porsche-involved litigation related to consumer finance, internal investigations, governmental audits and insurance claims. As Porsche’s law enforcement liaison, he reviewed all governmental subpoena requests, represented the company in asset forfeiture proceedings, and vigorously protected the interests of the company when defrauded by unscrupulous individuals or criminal organizations. He also served as counsel to Porsche Motorsport North America, Porsche’s North American racing team supplier, and Porsche Latin America, a subsidiary supporting Porsche’s network of 16 vehicle importers operating in 22 countries throughout Central and South America.
Prior to Porsche, Michael worked as a prosecutor in suburban Chicago. As an Assistant State’s Attorney, he acted as lead counsel in over 30 trials, and as a felony review prosecutor, directed law enforcement investigations resulting in over 1,000 felony indictments. Working closely with federal, state and local law enforcement, he was the chief counsel in the investigation and successful prosecution of a technology executive accused of embezzling over $1 million in company funds and oversaw the investigation and successful prosecution of eight environmental activists accused of targeting the families of the CEO and CFO of a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical company.
